Help me pick a favorite MLS/Premier League team

Taking the first couple of steps on a new journey is usually quite intimidating. If you are in a situation like mine, it might be because you have no clue where your voyage will end up taking you. Another hindrance for me in regards to my current dilemma is the fact that I have no clue what I am talking about, something that is difficult for me to admit.

The problem at hand is picking a favorite soccer team...or…club? You see the problem.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, but like most Americans, I just never found it all that entertaining. That was until recently, when I began watching a few MLS games in the background of doing my homework.

The games were snatching my interest and keeping me glued to my television screen. I had found a new appreciation for the strategy, conditioning of the players, the moment when a team finally breaks through and creates a scoring chance and so much more.

Previously, I had watched some Premier League and World Cup games that had me wanting to come back for more, but I neglected to pursue any sort of soccer fandom at either of those times.

Being so obsessed with sports, it is weird for me to have essentially no clue about a major sports league/leagues. I could not name five players currently in the MLS or the Premier League. Yes, that is the case now, but I want that to change.

Help me pick a favorite MLS team and Premier League team. By selecting a favorite team, I can create a starting point and begin my pursuit of being an educated fan of soccer.

To help with the process, here are my top three picks for each league:

Major League Soccer

1. LA Galaxy

We interviewed someone on the team (Ethan Zubak) on the Stranded Sports Podcast. My only gripe with them is that they seem to be super popular. I don’t want to just jump on a bandwagon or find myself supporting the Yankees of the MLS.

2. San Jose Earthquakes

I had a great run with them on FIFA a few years ago. Do you want more reasons? Well, there aren’t any.

3. Charlotte FC

Their first season starts next year and so does my first full season of being an MLS fan. Sounds like a pretty solid option for that reason alone. Maybe we could grow together?

Premier League

1. Chelsea

They have Christian Pulisic. It would be cool to support a team that has an American in such a prominent role, but something about Chelsea rubs me the wrong way. I might be wrong.

2. Everton

I hear about Everton a lot, but I feel like they never win anything. I love a lovable loser. If they aren’t losers or lovable, then nevermind.

3. Crystal Palace

Sounds like a nice place.

That’s really it. I am open to more suggestions in the comments, don’t feel like these lists are the only ones I will choose from.

I look forward to learning more about the great game of soccer!
