Khabib Nurmagomedov Announces Retirement After UFC 254

The most anticipated UFC fight of the year has now come and gone.

Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov faced off against the Interim Champion Justin Gaethje yesterday afternoon at the Flash Forum on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

The first round of the fight was pretty entertaining, to say the least, as both fighters were trading blows back and forth.

But in the second round, it was all Nurmagomedov. The Russian put Gaethje into a triangle choke and made him submit early in the round. In his last four fights, Nurmagomedov has won three of his last four via submission.

Nurmagomedov's father Abdulmanap (57) passed away from complications with the Coronavirus. Abdulmanap was in Kahbib's corner in every fight of his professional MMA career.

Kahbib was fighting with a heavy heart as this was his first fight after his father had passed away. After he made Gaethje submit he broke down in the middle of the octagon overcome with emotion.

In a post-fight interview with Jon Anik Nurmagonmedov announced his retirement from the sport because his mother did not want him to compete without his father in his corner. Kahbib said "I promised her this was gonna be my last fight," Nurmagomedov said. "If I give my word, I have to follow this." Numagonmedov left his gloves in the middle of the ring after the fight."

Khabib's win against Gaethje capped off an impressive MMA/UFC career posting an undefeated record of (29-0) and holding the most title defenses in UFC lightweight history with three. He won eight of his fights by knockout and 11 by way of submission. Kahbib is being recognized as one of the best pound for pound fighters in UFC history.
