Pittsburgh Pirates smorgasbord

Updated: May 14, 2021

A lot has happened in terms of transactions for the Pittsburgh Pirates over the past hour, so let's catch everyone up to speed before the first pitch against the Chicago Cubs this afternoon.

Ke'Bryan Hayes to the 60 day IL

It seemed as if Ke'Bryan Hayes was going to make his return to the field in the near future after he started to take some swings in the cage this past week in San Diego and Chicago, but this morning Derek Shelton said that his timetable to return would be around the month of June. Hayes has not appeared in a game since the second game of the season against the Chicago Cubs after he injured his wrist in his first at bat of the contest on April 3.

Colin Moran put on the 10 day IL

Moran was placed on the 10 day IL this morning after he suffered a non-contact injury in yesterday's game. After the game, it was announced that he was day-to-day with left groin discomfort but this morning the staff made the move to the 10 day injured list.

RHP Michael Feliz Designated for assignment.

Feliz appeared just seven games this season, posting a 2.35 ERA with eight strikeouts. A cracked nail placed him on the IL in the middle of April. The team recently activated him and then this morning they designated Feliz for assignment.

Geoff Hartlieb recalled

Hartlieb makes his return to the big league roster for the first time this season, as he spent his time with the minor league camp and most recently with the Indianapolis Indians, where he appeared in two games pitching two inning and punching out three.

In 21 games last season, the 27-year old posted a 3.63 ERA with 19 strikeouts.

Troy Stokes to make Major League Debut today

Stokes Jr. will make his debut today, batting in the eight hole and squaring off against Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks. In his minor league career, Stokes hit .249 with 58 home runs, 247 RBI and 130 stolen bases.

Ben Gamel claimed off waivers from Cleveland

The plan for Gamel is to be in uniform come Monday when the Pittsburgh Pirates return home to kickoff a three game set against the Cincinnati Reds. Gamel has had a rough start to the 2021 campaign, as in 14 at bats, he is hitting just .071.
