Preview: Central Catholic looks to capture back to back 6A WPIAL titles

PITTSBURGH, Pa- In a little less than 12 hours, there will be a champion crowned in the WPIAL 6A conference. No. 1 North Allegheny (6-0) has been on a roll this season as they have yet to lose a game. The Tigers are looking to capture their first WPIAL title in eight years. The last time they won the title, back in 2012, they went on to win the State Championship. As for Central Catholic (5-2), they have had a solid 2020 campaign and are going into a matchup after a statement win against Mt. Lebanon last week, taking the game by a score of 35-0. They held the Blue Devils' offense to negative yards. The Vikings are looking to continue their recent success and win back-to-back WPIAL titles.

Scouting the Tigers

The Tigers are coming into this game after defeating fourth-seeded Seneca Valley High School by a modest score of 21-7. North Allegheny is led by Senior quarterback Greg Phillips and running back Nathan Hoke. The defense has also been a key contributor to the Tiger's success this year, as they have held teams in under 14 points in five out of six games. The Tigers have also won five out of six games by 14 points or more.

A look at the Vikings

Central Catholic was led to the WPIAL Championship game by its stingy defense, but let's not forget what got them the lead in that game. Senior quarterback Adam Orbin has been stupendous this season for the Vikings coming up big in the WPIAL semifinal matchup game vs. Mt. Lebanon. In four out of its seven games, Central Catholic has beat teams by two possessions or more.

I believe that early on it's going to be a defensive battle in the trenches as both teams have highly touted defenses. As the game goes on, you are going to start to see both offenses find holes in the defense and begin to find success on that side of the ball. Look for this game to be highly contested throughout all four quarters as both teams have built impressive resumes leading up to this contest.
